Today, I learned:
1) Novelist and social critic George Orwell was born on this day in 1903 as Eric Arthur Blair.
2) Noted astronomer WH Walter Baade was the first person to fully resolve the Andromeda Galaxy. He also discovered 10 asteroids before he died in 1960.
3) The basketball was first patented by G.L. Pierce in 1929 (US Patent #1,718,305). However, Jamie Naismith is credited with inventing the game of basketball in 1891.
4) Finland, aided by Nazi Germany, declared war on the Soviet Union in 1941. The ‘Continuation War’ lasted until 1944, all while WWII was raging on. Finland lost.
